6. When to use your AVENT ISIS Breast Pump

1) If possible, wait until your milk supply and Breastfeeding times are well established - normally at least 2-4 weeks after birth.
2) The exceptions to the above are:
a) If you are expressing milk for your baby to be given in hospital.
b) If your breasts are engorged (painful and swollen), you can express some milk before or between feeds to ease the pain and help your baby to latch on more easily.
c) If you are separated from your baby at any time and wish to continue to Breastfeed when you are reunited, you should express your milk regularly to stimulate your milk supply.
3) You will need to find the right times of the day for you to express your milk, for instance:
a) early in the morning when your breasts are very full, just before or after your baby's first feed, or
b) after a feed, if your baby has not emptied both breasts, or
c) between feeds, or in a break, if you have returned to work.

7. Hints to help you succeed

1) Using a breast pump takes practice - you may need to make several attempts before you succeed, but because the AVENT ISIS breast pump is so simple and natural to use, you will soon get used to expressing your milk.
2) Having your baby or a photograph of your baby nearby can help encourage 'let-down'.
3) Placing a warm cloth on the breasts for a few minutes before you start pumping can encourage milk flow and soothe painful breasts.
4) Practice with your pump to find the best technique for you. Don't worry if your milk does not flow immediately. Relax and continue pumping. At first, only express from each breast for a few minutes at a time. If the process becomes very painful, STOP and consult your Breastfeeding advisor.

8. How to use your AVENT ISIS Breast Pump

1) Wash your hands thoroughly and make sure your breasts are clean and your nipples are not blocked.
2) Make sure you have sterilised and carefully assembled your pump as shown in sections 3-6.
3) Look again at the 'Hints to help you succeed' section.
4) Relax in a comfortable chair, leaning slightly forward. Make sure you have a glass of water or other drink nearby.
5) Press the funnel and silicone petal massager of the pump firmly against your breast making sure that no air can escape - otherwise there will be no suction.
6) As you gently push down on the pump handle you will feel the suction on your breast. You don't need to use the full stroke of the handle to create a vacuum - only as much as is comfortable.
7) Milk will begin to flow after the first few 'pumps'. Hold the vacuum for 2-3 seconds and always allow the handle to return to its resting position after each stroke. This will allow the milk to flow into the bottle and not build up in the body of the pump.

COMFORT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MAXIMUM SUCTION. YOUR MILK WILL SOON START FLOWING EVEN THOUGH YOU MAY NOT USE ALL THE SUCTION THE PUMP CAN GENERATE. DO NOT KEEP PUMPING THE HANDLE. THE 2/3 SECOND CYCLE DESCRIBED ABOVE IMITATES YOUR BABY'S NATURAL SUCK/RELEASE SUCKLING RHYTHM.

8) Whilst some women may prefer to use the pump without the silicone petal massager, extensive trials held before the product was launched showed that, in most cases, the massaging effect of the petals flexing in and out around the areola stimulates the let down reflex and allows you to express far more milk more quickly.
9) On average you will need to pump for 10 minutes to express 60/120ml or 2/4 ozs. However, this is just a guide and varies from woman to woman.

9. How to store and use your expressed breast milk

• Store expressed breast milk for up to 24 hours in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer.

• If you are keeping milk in the fridge to add to during the daytime ensure that it is put back in the fridge each time. Milk can only be kept like this for a maximum of 24 hours (from the first expression) after which time it must be used immediately or frozen for future use.

• Milk can be stored in covered AVENT bottles (4oz/125ml or 8oz/260ml) using the AVENT Silicone Sealing Discs or in AVENT disposable bottle bags, clearly labelled with date of expression.

• No more than 6fl.oz. (170ml) of milk should be stored in a disposable bag. Seal the BAG with an AVENT clip, allowing room for the milk to expand as it freezes. Make sure it is well protected in the freezer to prevent crushing. This can be done by separating each bag using greaseproof paper and standing upright in a plastic container.

• Expressed milk should be refrigerated immediately.

• Breast milk can be heated in the same way as any other bottle feed (but never in the microwave as this may destroy valuable nutrients and antibodies).

• Frozen breast milk can be defrosted overnight in the refrigerator, heated gradually in warm water or in an AVENT Bottle Warmer on the lowest setting.

• Once thawed, use within 24 hours.

NEVER refreeze breast milk.

DO NOT add fresh breast milk to already frozen milk for storage.

NEVER immerse a frozen bottle or bag in boiling water as this may cause it to crack/split.

• If the breast milk is stored in a bottle, to feed baby, replace the sealing disc with a sterilised AVENT teat.

• If it is stored in a disposable bag, fit the bag into the AVENT Disposable Bottle Holder and feed in the normal way.

• For added security when storing in the freezer, it is recommended that you use 2 Disposable Bags, one inside another.
