Isis Breast Pump: Efficiency And Comfort Over The Mini-Electric

A randomized study published in the Journal of Human Lactation (May 2001) proved that the volume of milk expressed by mothers in a fixed 20-minute period using the Avent Isis Breast Pump was equal to that produced by using a mini-electric breast pump. Conducted by Dr. Alan Lucas and Dr. Mary Fewtrell, leading British pediatricians and infant nutrition specialists, the study discredited popular notions that the mini-electric breast pump is superior to a manual pump.

While the researchers also looked at the volume of milk produced, weight of milk produced and the fat content of the milk, a number of the study's strongest conclusions came from a questionnaire completed by each mother at the end of her participation in the study. Some of these results include:

  • Mothers gave the Avent Isis Pump equal or higher rates in all areas when compared with the mini-electric pump, including the amount of milk expressed.
  • Mothers rated the Isis Pump as outperforming the mini-electric pump in the following areas: "Comfort," "Pleasant to Use" and "Overall Opinion of Pump."
  • Four times as many mothers gave the Isis Breast Pump a top score for comfort.
  • Over half of the mothers continued to use the Isis Pump at the conclusion of the study.
This study's findings are significant because many mothers have unnecessarily compromised on comfort, thinking they could pump faster with a mini-electric breast pump. Because the Isis Pump rivals mini-electric pumps in efficiency, and surpasses them in comfort, mothers who use the Isis Pump can continue to breastfeed longer.
