Unique Mums LLC was started in January 2004 by three Brooklyn-based moms, Susan Lazor, Kirsty Ball and Diana Plunkett. Their goal is to provide help and guidance for parents with simple, elegant and unique products that make the transition into parenthood as smooth and effortless as possible.
Unique Mums’ premier product is The Nursing Bracelet™, researched and developed over two years, and now on sale in New York City.
The idea came from Susan, whose son Ethan was born October 2001.
"In the first months after giving birth, I quickly realized the joys of motherhood, but was also faced with challenges that felt overwhelming at times.
"Breastfeeding Ethan has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life, but getting into the rhythm wasn't easy. I had trouble remembering when he fed and I could never tell which breast to use simply by 'feel'. Trying to keep notes just didn't work for me because I could never remember where I'd left the paper.
"I knew there had to be something better. I starting working on ideas for The Nursing Bracelet™ and over two years the design was improved and finalized. I believe it's an invaluable and attractive tool for new moms, or indeed anybody that is taking care of a newborn."
Kirsty, who met Susan through a mother’s group when her son Alex was five weeks old, began working with Susan in the summer of 2003.
"I also nursed my son and it came fairly easily, but I found the night feeds tough. My son fed often, and I was so tired I barely remembered which day it was, never mind when he'd last fed. I felt as if it was something I had to just put up with, but motherhood has taught me never to be afraid to ask for or receive help, whatever form it takes. I believe The Nursing Bracelet will be invaluable to new moms."
Starting a business and child-rearing proved a tough combination. "We had lots of meetings in the playground," says Kirsty. But things improved when Diana, their third member, joined.
Diana contributed project management savvy and her own experiences of nursing and motherhood: her son Zachary is the oldest of the Unique Mums' children.
"I met Susan when Zachary was about 6 months old. Ethan was on the swing next to us and we just started chatting, as mothers do, about the milestones reached, things we had tried that worked and things that didn't."
"When Susan spoke to me about The Nursing Bracelet™ it clicked with me right away. I had kept a diary of when I fed, but this was not convenient. I had to make sure I always had the book nearby and it was just one more thing to carry around.
